From the 4th February 2016 the DAB slot currently used by Smile Sussex will be changing under new owners UKRD, and replaced by Oldies Sussex.
Smile Sussex, from this date will no longer be available across the South Coast area on DAB radios.
Smile Sussex will continue for now on the local minimux which means that listeners in the Brighton area will still be able to receive Smile Sussex on their DAB sets.
For other listeners, there will still be a online service through radioplayer and the website for you to continue listening.
I am very sad that i shall not be able tp receive Smile Sussex soon on Dab. I like to listen late nights and early morning so would not be able to listen from my computer. Every time thereis something traditional and gentle, it is taken away. Shame, for even though i like 70′s music, i shall not listen to this new station on principle
Why do things have to change? Smile Radio was the best thing on the air waves, I even went out and bought another Dab radio especially so we could listen to Smile radio in our kitchen.
Oldies radio is the same as any other station. please bring Smile Radio back or at least can Oldies Radio play the same kind of music, it’s not just the oldies that appreciate Sinatra, Ella, Louie and more…
I too am very sad not to be able to receive Smile Sussex on DAB. There are many stations offering 70s music and Smile was a unique station specialising in Big Band, Swing and Jazz. I shall not listen to the new station either.
The news that Smile will no longer be available on DAB is devastating ! I always have it on in my car as I travel around Surrey and Sussex and I simply adore the music that is played everyday. It’s such calm easy listening and wonderful music and its loss from the DAB radio band is shameful! I will certainly not be listening to its successor with its horrible name! I hope that one day Smile returns to DAB.
I had a DAB radio for Christmas and have a new love in my life – Smile Sussex! My worn out swing and jazz cds have been put to rest and I’m sashaying around my kitchen morning, noon and night to the music I love best. But what is this? No sooner found then lost forever… to another faceless corporate giant. I’m very sad that Smile Sussex is to finish broadcasting and I won’t be able to listen on-line as that doesn’t fit with my lifestyle.
I’m really disappointed to be losing Smile from the DAB in my car. A couple of times each week I travel from my home in Littlehampton over to the other end of Sussex to teach young people to play just the same types of music on the mighty theatre organ at the http://www.RyeWurlitzerAcademy.org.uk and the station has been a joy as it has accompanied me on the many journeys.
Why do people have to faff around with things that aren’t broken?! Smile used to make me do exactly that, now it makes me wince with the jarring juxtaposition of these new songs. We’ve got a thousand stations playing Christina Aguilera, 70s disco and 70s rock which I heard yesterday at about 4pm. There was absolutely nothing wrong with this station as it was!! I can’t listen to this anymore, sorry.
I am so sad that I will not be able to listen to Smile in my car or in the kitchen whilst cooking. It was such a great discovery and I converted several people. Like Vanessa, although I like oldies I doubt I will listen and there are plenty of stations playing the same music but none playing the music that Smile does. Bad decision in my opinion.
A few years ago I was so pleased to find some decent music on my Dab radio. As usual anything good in this world has to be removed. Anyway thank you so much for the pleasure you have given me.
What a sad day and time….Thursday 4th February 13.00pm and SMILE no longer available on DAB Radio. The ‘new’ station ‘Oldie Sussex’ with hits from 50s, 60s, and 70s! What an awful ‘drug’ at 7.45am this morning….obviously 70′s music! Not a good way to wake up! [I was born in 1948 so have lived through many eras and was married in 1970 but most of the ‘music’ is definitely not relaxing!
I agree with Vanessa, I have enjoyed this easy listening kind of Jazz music very much. But won’t find it so easy to listen online. It was the same with Saga, they did a very similar type of show and then that disappeared. I have tried the new ‘Oldies Sussex’, but in my opinion its not as good, its too similar to other radio stations.
We love Smile Sussex too, but we listen to it online. For those with DAB radios, consider switching over to online using your smart phone, and just buy a speaker unit for your phone. It replicates the radio experience. There’s no reason to lose access.
I really miss being able to listen to Smile Sussex on my DAB radio. Smile was a refreshing change and so very different from other music radio stations, and certainly catered for a niche market. No presenters needed and no commercials just wall to wall music with station idents every two songs. It is a shame that it has been replaced by a service so similar to one that is already available on DAB. Come on UKRD do see some sense and return Smile as it was.
Also very sad to see this go, myself and my wife only found it just prior to Christmas but even though we only had it for a short while we greatly enjoyed it!
I am so disappointed this has changed to the style of music that I can hear on plenty of other radio stations . Smile was unique .I am over fifty but I won’t bother to tune in to Oldies Sussex I have already got other stations for 70′s tracks.
So very sad to have lost Smile Sussex. My mum and I have loved listening since we first found it.
Please come back!
